EVERYBODY'S IN LA: CAMRYN WISNIEWSKI, SINGER
Hey, thanks for talking to us. Why and where are you in New Orleans, LA?
Hey hey! My name is Camryn, everyone calls me Cam, the band calls me Cam Jam, but I go by Cam Wizz on stage. I am New Orleans born and raised. This city has really found its way of keeping me around no matter how many times I thought I wanted to leave. I currently live in a little apartment in Lakeview.
Tell us about your musical journey up to forming Few Blue…school bands? Cool siblings with great taste in music? Formative concert? How did it all start for you?
It all started for me at Ursuline Academy in 2nd grade when my music teacher, Mr. Kemp, asked me if I could bark in order to be cast as Toto in The Wizard of Oz. From then on I did musicals. I did my last musical at Dominican High School, I was Cinderella in Cinderella. As much as I loved dancing and singing (the acting was never really my favorite), I always knew that I wanted to sing with crazier crowds and edgier songs.
Who were your early musical influences? Did you listen to the same music/bands growing up as you do now?
So I grew up doing musical theatre, and Mamma Mia was my favorite. My Mom, my sister and I watched it all of the time and I just fell in love with ABBA. The songs were a great mix of musical theatre with rock or 70s influences, so it was a great introduction to that time in music for me. I still absolutely love ABBA. Funnily enough, I also listen to my favorite singer from when I was a kid…. Miley Cyrus. I grew up watching and listening her and always loved what she did. She is now doing a lot of rock covers these days, which just makes everything full circle for me. My sister also had a huge impact on what I was listening to as a kid - I specifically remember her punk phase. On road trips, my parents would play classic rock and 2000’s rock as well.
Tell us how Few Blue came to be. Where did y’all meet? Did it all just gel straight away or did it take a while to find your groove as a band?
The boys went to Holy Cross together and I went to Dominican. I sort of knew our bass player Christian from high school, and our lead guitar player Brad, from a mutual friend. Brad and Rob, our drummer, had a popular band called Longitude 90 . When they separated for college, Brad and Rob went to LSU looking to build another band. Brad and I were re-introduced, and he invited me to sing some songs with them. I am almost positive that after the first night, I was hanging out with them every single day.
What’s the musical ethos or philosophy of the band?
We are here for a modern take on classic rock. We want to make it fun and relatable for people our age to listen to!
Do you have a routine to keep your voice at its best? Any pre-gig rituals or regimens?
Oh yeah… it’s a full time job for me. I don’t drink or eat dairy during the week of shows, I don’t scream my favorite songs at the top of my lungs in my car. If my girlfriends want to go out the night before a show, I'm careful with what I drink and how loudly I'm talking. I won’t go on a run outside if it is cold because it always dries up my throat… I am always thinking about it!
Which local bands do you rate? Which non-local bands do you love?
The Revivalists - me and the band love love love those guys. We go see them any chance we get. The guys' high school band even had the opportunity to play a Revivalists songs with David Shaw. I absolutely love Greta Van Fleet.
Tell us about the best concert that you’ve attended as a fan.
The best concert I went to as a fan was not too long ago. It was the Garth Brooks concert in Death Valley at LSU and it was insanely loud and just filled with people and I think that was just an unforgettable concert.
What are some of your favorite local spots for eats/drinks/hangs?
Vintage Rock Club is my absolute favorite. I bring my girls there all the time and my band loves it there too. Of course my friends' parents love it too because of the music they play. As much as we make fun of our friends that go to Parlay’s every night, it is one of our favorite spots. My friends from high school and I just moved into this super cute apartment in Lakeview and everyone comes over for dinner, and then we go to bingo or trivia at Parlay’s.
