Sitting pretty at the Catsuma....sorry, SATsuma Cafe
Satsuma Cafe
3218 Dauphine Street
This is likely a biased review since it’s my local coffee shop and I go often enough that they should be charging me rent, but it’s not like I get special treatment, other than the occasional free refill. They strive to make everyone, local or tourist, feel welcome. That also extends to a feline member of staff, who still remains nameless, so I just call him Satsuma Cat. But don’t get any ideas - this is a cafe with a cat, and NOT A CAT CAFE.
It is your standard coffee shop fare, breakfast and lunch, sandwiches, salads, and plates, but quite high quality. The sourdough bread is particularly nice. They confided in me that it’s made by Leidenheimer, of New Orleans poboy fame, but based on a special flour and recipe by Susan Spicer. It is easily as good as anything I’ve had.
They sort of have two genres of customers and offer food to match. You can eat regular stuff, like a bacon and egg plate or a turkey sandwich, or one can go big, hipster-style, with a kale salad, or sub tofu for the eggs on the breakfast plate, and wash it down with a cold-pressed juice, the stranger the better. Wheatgrass? Or perhaps a vegan pastry? I don’t think Satsuma Cat approves of any of this, but he’s a feline VIP and orders off-menu anyway.
They have great coffee and take pride in only letting it sit for what seems to me like less than medium double-digit minutes before replacing it. “Here’s a little taste for now, but I’ll bring you a cup from the new pot.”
It’s in a quick-service format so you order at the counter. Bonus points for the hidden shelf of art books to peruse while you’re there.
